My Little Journey to LibreOffice x Ubuntu Conference Asia 2023

My Little Journey to LibreOffice x Ubuntu Conference Asia 2023

This time I was assigned to help (again) behind the scenes, namely preparing the platform for speakers submitting their papers (call for papers), and the LOUCA23 ticket sales platform. I will not discuss a detailed review of the platform here. Oh yes, in preparation for the platform this time I was also helped by Firman, a friend of mine from college, hehe.

At this LOUCA event, the enthusiasm of community friends is still very high. It can be seen from the CfP platform monitoring that around 97 proposals were received, and after being filtered, around 32 proposals were accepted. Meanwhile, from the ticket sales platform, a total of around 400 tickets were sold out, cool! WOoooOww!

Of course there is the classic drama that accompanies during the cfp and tickets selling. There are those who have decided to submit, there are those who buy tickets but then it gets close to closing, until finally the closing deadline for the cfp and tickets have passed or sold out then ask the committee for help to open the back door (sudo route) 😀

Towards LOUCA

I departed from Bogor City together with the Nenggala team on October 5 2023, by train, tut tuut tuut, hehe. Departing from Bogor in the morning at 5.30 WIB, why is it so early? Yes, because that day coincides with Indonesia National Soldier Day, where the Monas intersection in Jakarta is temporarily closed. So to avoid traffic, we decide to go early from Bogor because the train departed at 8.50 WIB 😀

We took the Argo Dwipangga train on the Gambir – Solo Balapan route. Arrive Solo around 15.50. Arriving there, we went straight to the hotel to rest for a while and in the evening went straight to the venue to drop-off community booth things and had a short briefing with the local committee in preparation for the next day. At around 22.00 we returned to the hotel to rest. A colleague from KLAS contacted me that night to join me for a temporary stay at the hotel. But, I actually fell asleep 😦 , I feel very guilty, (ngapunten cak darian, cak roby  ) 😦

The next day, after Friday prayers, we rushed to the venue, helped prepare the venue, decorations, and so on. Due to campus policy, every Friday at the beginning of the month, it turns out there is a vehicle emission-free policy, so all emisision vehicles are not allowed to enter university until 5 pm. Like it or not, all transportation for booth and events materials can only arrive after 5 pm. 😦

But apart from that, salute for local committee, especially the Paguyuban Linux Solo teams, 4 thumbs! Because from morning until evening they continue to accompany others to prepare everything needed for the 2 days event tomorrow.

In the late night, bung Firman arrived in Solo! Immediately that night I stayed up late with him to debug the application for participant registration for tomorrow. Oh yes, this time LOUCA 2023 we are trying to go paperless at the participant registration table, hehe. So then registration team have to do is scan the participant’s tickets to permit the participants who come, distribute merchandise and lunch meals.

Finally LOUCA, Day-1 !

With sparkling eyes, the alarm clock rang, at 5 am I immediately rushed to shower, pray, and get ready to go to the venue with Firman and Rania Amina. We rush early to prepare everything that wasn’t ready for the first day of LOUCA. Arrived at the venue around 7 o’clock. Firman and I went straight to the registration table and gave a briefing to our registration team to help handle the incoming participants.

That morning until noon, many participants still coming. We scanned participant tickets and distributed merchandise to those who had just arrived. So on the first day there were around 300 participants who came. The 2 floors in the main hall are quite full! Wow!

Towards noon, I met Herpiko, the code magician at BlankOn. I immediately escorted him to the speaker’s room for attendance. So, in the speaker’s room, I met Bapak Openstack Indonesia, Lazuardi, wow!! He was in discussion with Utian and Ary. So, I joined them for a while then returned to the main hall.

Suddenly it was lunch time, so fast, bro! We immediately did another scan to bring meals. After lunch, Firman and I tried to wander around for parallel class sessions, trying to enjoy the event. However, we couldn’t stay for long, because we had to help other committees to ensure that the parallel classes ran smoothly. There were classes that were empty without participants, so together with other committees we issued a “Tim Hore” move, so that several classes that were empty without participants now had participants. so that the speakers are not disappointed. After that, i going back to main hall to join Aldin’s class that presenting about eBPF.

After the parallel classes is finished, we enjoying the coffee break session, talk to each other participant and community, then continue with the lightning talk session. The lightning talk session was very interesting, there was a 15 year old child presenting on the stage in English at the Asian Conference level, he was Raditya Abdi, telling about his experience learning design using the FOSS application in junior high school (SMP). Cool!

The lightning talk session was continued with presentation of material from Sokibi. The most eccentric presentation I’ve ever come across, haha. He made 500 slides to present in 10 minutes :joy: . Cooool! After that there was a Cak Darian session which told the history of KLAS until its existence today. And finally closing the first day, the entire committee took a photo together in front of the photo booth.

In the evening we had dinner together at one of the restaurants (forgot the name). Walk from the hotel to where to eat. Because it was Saturday night, the atmosphere was busy, especially passing by Pura Mangkunegaran where there was a festival that night until Sunday night. After dinner, Firman and I returned to the hotel to rest.

LOUCA, Day Two!

Because today is Sunday, there is a Car Free Day (CFD) along the road behind the hotel, so Rania and I decided to go for a morning walk while looking for breakfast.

car free day

We came back early, showered quickly and got ready to go to the venue. Because we had to bring Lothar and Frank to arrive at the venue before 9.00 considering they had a main session at that time. We left around 8.00. It’s also quite difficult to find transportation, because it’s Sunday and some roads are blocked :(.

Today Firman and I have decided that we have to take a class! So after arriving at the venue, do a briefing with our re-registration team, go straight to class, that’s the plan. But, apparently, I forgot, Pak Nugroho came as a speaker, Rijal came too, Faza also came on this second day. Yes, they are are the “magician designer” member from Gimpscape. After saying hello to them, I joined Pak Nugroho’s class for a while, then I helped committee again around the parallel class while carrying the VGA converter cable that Rania had given me :D, because in several parallel classes had troubles with the projector cable.

So, finally I took part in Kuang Tin Lin’s class, he told us about his experience of fighting for FOSS in the junior high school environment which at that time he taught so until he received support from the government for the use of FOSS applications from an early age, at least at the education level. Wow, cool! After that, the session continued with Franklin Weng, he demonstrated how to deploy Oxool (Taiwanese version of LibreOffice Online) easily. Cool!

joining Kuan-Tin Lin, Franklin Weng and Jiajun Xu classes

After leaving there, I returned to the main hall for lunch, and continued to just take part in the session in the main hall, because my knees were already like a jelly, haha. In the main hall I met and discussed with other cool people at the community booth. Oh yeah, at the community booth there was Gimpscape which manned by Fawwaz, there was Openinfra by Pahrial, there was LibreOffice which was manned by Faiq and Sokibi, and also met Iwan Tahari from Sepatu Fans. Also, on the second day, I had the opportunity to meet my old colleagues, Robi and Rozaqi, and they came still wearing their new uniforms 😀

In the main hall there was a session from Lutfi, he promoted Yuyu as an add-on for billing on OpenStack. The session continued with Ariq who presented material on UbuntuPort on a smartphone, then the session was Bayu Aji, a famous MC and regular designer outside with his material on drawing with LibreOffice Draw! After that there was a panel discussion session. So, during the panel discussion session, I didn’t really pay attention.

Gimpscape squads

At the end of the event after the panel discussion, all of us committee members and volunteers came to the front of the stage for a group photo. Yep. Kudos to all!

In the evening there was dinner together again, but this time Mr. Firman had to return to Sidoarjo because he had to go back to work tomorrow. So, thanks for your help, Firman!

LOUCA, Day 3 ?

yup, this is last day. Monday. This is a touring session, a city tour of Surakarta :D. We left at 9, went to the batik center in the Kauman area, then to the Surakarta palace, then to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, then had lunch, then to the Herritage Palace, finally to Javenir to buy souvenirs.

That evening I returned to Jakarta by Manahan Train, route Solo Balapan – Gambir, around 22.30, arrived Jakarta around 6.30, then returned to Bogor with Haris

Epilogue

Well, that’s it. That’s my version of the LibreOffice x Ubuntu Conference Asia 2023 series. To all components involved, I really appreciate it, especially the committee team and volunteers who took the time to make the event a success, as well as the participants, communities and sponsors who also supported the success of the event.
